PICTURE MATCH

The Picture Match, the annual two-leg fixture between East Devon and Sidmouth, dates back to 1932, when the captain of East Devon, H W Adie, received a challenge from “16 stalwart fellows” of Sidmouth golf club. Adie replied by acknowledging the arrival of these “rabbits” as he called them and promising they would be “slaughtered”! At about the same time two cartoons depicting the event were drawn by a Sidmouth member and these were later framed together to produce “The Picture”. One shows an eager team of Sidmouth rabbits making its way over Peak Hill, led by the Sidmouth Secretary F H Carroll. The second picture is drawn at the same spot but this time the rabbits are lying forlornly on the ground shot dead, and Mr Carroll is walking back alone to Sidmouth. The competition is a foursomes and singles match played off level handicap. Home and Away Spring and Autumn alternately, 8 foursomes in the morning followed by 16 singles in the afternoon. Venues change each year.
